Chevrolet Corvair

The Corvair is popularly known for remaining the only American-designed, mass-produced public car with a rear-mounted, air-cooled engine. Manufactured between 1960 and 1969, the Corvair was available as a 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan, passenger van, commercial van, pick-up truck, and 4-door station wagon body styles in its first generation ending 1964.

The second-generation built between 1965 and 1969 featured convertible, 2-door coupe, and 4-door hardtop body styles. After Ralph Nader’s Chevrolet Corvair chapter in his book, the model decreased its advantage in automotive sales to just 27,000 in 1967 before finally getting dropped from production in 1969.
