For sale at Gateway Classic Cars in our St. Louis showroom is a 1971 Plymouth Barracuda painted in Curious Yellow and powered by the infamous 426 Hemi. Originally the car was powered by a 318. Most would agree that the 318 is a great engine, to pull out and replace it. What better engine to use than an original 426 Hemi from 1968. In our minds, the best way to enjoy a Hemi is with a 4-speed. Here you go, 4-speed transmission(new clutch and pressure plate) with a 3.91 gear set in an 8 3/4 rear end. This makes for a very fun muscle car. Equipment is minimal, but that seems appropriate for a Hemi powered muscle car. It is equipped with power steering and an AM radio is in place, but why would you bother? You have the music of the Hemi and a gas pedal for the volume control, that’s all you need. The paint will stop you in your tracks. This is a very high quality paint job with hours upon hours of wet sanding and rubbing for a true show car shine. Adding to the look is a set of MOPAR Rally wheels in 15″ with modern radial rubber, Hemi Billboard graphics and a black vinyl roof. After a total rest in 2006 the car is mechanically sound and thoughtfully built with quality in mind and no shortcuts taken. The 350-V8 puts out plenty of power and runs smooth and effortlessly with a complete Holley fuel system and polished Edelbrock Intake, MSD Electronic Ignition, a Griffin Radiator and cooling fan and power steering. Shifting is smooth and accurate with a 7R4 configured with Lokar linkage w/kick-down. The suspension is the perfect set up with 2″ drop spindles, shock cross-member support, Helwig sway bars riding on American Racing 17″ polished rims with four-wheel power Wilwood disc brakes. The exhaust is routed through Thorley Hot Jet coated headers to a set of great sounding Flowmaster mufflers w/stainless tips. Open the hood and the compartment is well accessorized for show. Body was completely disassembled for paint. The finish is glassy and smooth with excellent alignments all around. Chrome, glass rubber was all replaced and/or refreshed as well. The fit and finish is outstanding and the candy apple red over silver makes for a tasteful and unique combination setting it apart from other classic BelAirs.
Ford’s modern crop of Shelby-badged Mustangs sure are impressive, as the GT500 stands at the pinnacle of Ford performance with the most horsepower ever offered by a roadgoing Blue Oval product and the GT350 offers track-specific features to make it a serious contender on the tarmac. But as great as the Ford Mustang’s sixth generation has proven itself to be, it’s hard to argue that the first gen still reigns supreme as the best ever. Proof now comes in the form of an incredible 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 that just went live on the auction website Bring a Trailer complete with a dealer-installed 427ci side-oiler V8 under the hood.
As the seller has pointed out in comments, this car was no garage queen—apparently, “Mother loved classic cars. She drove this to shows.” And this Shelby deserved to be driven, having originally served as a floor display model at Paul’s Ford Sales of Kansas City, Missouri, where it received the side-oiler engine install before being sold in March 1969. Extensive ownership documentation accompanies this Shelby Mustang, while potential detriments to the final gavel price could be a repaint in Acapulco Blue with white stripes—a classic look but the original color was Highland Green like the Bullitt car.
Regardless, this car looks poised to draw in plenty of money. Cobra details abound, from the engine bay to the branded floor mats, while Carroll Shelby’s signature has adorned the dashboard since 1993. Air conditioning was optioned from the factory, though it is not currently functioning. A C6 automatic gearbox with three forward speeds is another unfortunate feature, though for elderly bidders who want to avoid using a clutch pedal and stick shift, perhaps the setup remains ideal. Bidding currently sits at $52,000 with six days left on the auction.
Luxury and technology upgrades highlighted in Revology Cars’ latest reproduction Mustang
Revology Cars, the renowned Orlando, Florida builder of new reproduction 1960s Ford Mustangs, continues to push the luxury and technology envelope with its latest new model, the 1968 Mustang 2+2 Fastback.
Known for building cars that are meticulously built, beautifully crafted, reliable, and fun to drive, Revology has become the quality and performance benchmark in the rapidly growing specialty automotive segment.
The ’68 model is a logical step for Revology, with several ’65, ’66, and ’67 models already in its product portfolio. To commemorate the occasion, the company’s first ’68 features a beautifully hand-crafted interior finished in the same Italian leather used by Ferrari. The car also features the Ford 6R80 electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission, for quick, smooth shifts and excellent fuel economy.
“The ’68 Mustang is a muscle car,” says Tom Scarpello, CEO of Revology Cars. “We added even more muscle, but more refinement as well. The result is very distinctive, like a bodybuilder in a tailored Armani suit.”
The interior of this car demonstrates that old world craftsmanship is alive and well at Revology. Jay Bowersox and Wilson Figueroa are experienced upholstery technicians, with years of experience in crafting leather interiors for luxury aircraft and yachts as well as cars. They are now able to see their expertise realized at Revology.
“Every panel is wrapped in the best Italian leather,” says Bowersox. The large centre console over the transmission is leather trimmed, as is the trunk area, the door panels, headliner, seats, dashboard and the steering wheel. “Even the German square weave carpet bindings are leather,” adds Bowersox.
“We worked with our engineers on the technical part of the design and paid a lot of attention to the stitching and curvature of the leather,” says Figueroa. “I fell in love with this car because it sets a benchmark for quality and attention to detail.”
Along with world-class interiors and sophisticated powertrains, Revology Cars offers a virtually unlimited palette of colors and high-quality materials as well as performance options to allow clients to personalize their vehicles. According to Yoshi Amano, Revology’s director of marketing and sales, “We don’t use off-the-shelf reproduction products. This Revology 1968 Mustang 2+2 Fastback will be exported to Japan. “I am proud to deliver the first ever Revology Mustang to Japan,” says Amano, a native of Japan. “Just think, a Japanese woman comes to America, helps to build the most American of cars, the Mustang, and sends it to Japan. My family and friends can’t believe it.”
