Believe in the possibility of it before you see it. Eventually that belief in the possibility of a dream, goal, or desire turns into reality. It doesn’t mean you don’t take action, but action won’t happen if the belief isn’t there. What it takes for you to reach success oftentimes is intangible and the opposite of instant gratification. As you start to take action towards reaching your goals and dreams, you are going to realize that with growth, you can’t touch it, it doesn’t have a particular appearance, it’s hardly measurable, and it’s hard to tell if what you are doing is even working. But know that it is, and that your trust and faith in what you are doing is worth it and has incredible value. Remind yourself that you are doing what it takes, probably doing what others aren’t willing to do to get to where you want to go. Believing in the possibility means believing in yourself. This is a really fun and easy Morning Meeting activity that’s best done outside, in a gym, or even in your hallway! All you need is two jump ropes or sticks! It’s called JUMP THE RIVER⠀ 🌊🌊🌊⠀ Start with your ropes about 1.5 feet apart. All students start on one side of the “river”- the space between the two ropes. The must jump the river without touching the ropes or center of the river at all. If they jump the river successfully, they make a line on the other side of the river. If they don’t jump the river, they are out. Once all students have attempted to jump the river, move one rope over to make it a little further from the other rope. Students try to jump the river again. This continues until one student is left or the river is too big to jump! ⠀ ❄️❄️❄️⠀ You can also call it Jump the Frozen River. Q. How do you keep up with marking and assessments? A. This has taken me a long time to work out and I feel like it is not a system for everyone, so I suggest you work out a system you like and stick to it. I have a clipboard with grids and checklists ready to go. I also have standard learning intentions laminated that I display at the start of lessons for the students to see and these are also on my assessment checklists. My clipboard probably comes out every second week for different groups and lessons. I also schedule groups of students every week in which are my ‘focus group’. During the focus group week, I look at students holistically and make extra time to speak with them about what is happening in their lives. I still focus on all other students, but this allows me to really connect with them and their learning styles. I document the focus students in my weekly planner. I also document key assessments, school assessment tasks and moderation tasks in my planning documents so I know when they need to be done. Quite often I type these in first so I can work my way backwards ensuring students have had enough time on units of work to complete the assessment. I have a ‘How are you going file’ where students house their assessments, goal setting and reflections. In regard to keeping up with marking, I do over the shoulder, instant feedback, have students mark their own work and I have also created A5 sheets that can be stapled to students’ work. This A5 sheets can be filled in by me, or by students or by peers. For tasks I need to assess I have a marking display folder in which work goes into. It is a display folder because I have to mark it otherwise the folder gets full quickly. I also schedule marking time in my DOTT time, so I always have space to get it done. One of my coworkers asked me today why I coach on top of teaching. This was my answer:⠀ ⠀ I was an obsessive teacher that couldn’t get my brain outside of my classroom. I showed up at 7am and stayed until 7pm. I had lost my sense of self and my health was going downhill with it. Coaching has provided me with an outlet. It’s my outlet for stress, my purpose outside of the four walls of our classroom, it’s the thing that keeps me sane. I helps me set a good example for my students because they know exercising and eating healthy is important to me. It’s my happy hour (or half hour) and my daily therapy time. Coaching has provided me with a support system, and I truly have found my squad. It’s the reason I am the teacher that I am, why I haven’t become burnt out, and why I see my true potential! I could never do life without coaching now that it’s a part of my life! I remember when... . I would come home from school, change into sweats, and sit on the couch for hours until I went to bed. I would be too tired to cook a real dinner so sometimes it would just be chips and salsa. I would lay out my workout clothes and say that tomorrow I would come home, change, and get to a class at the gym. It was embarrassing how long I let this cycle go on. I was paying for a gym membership where some weeks I was all in every day and others I had every excuse in the book not to go. It wasn't until I found this community of women to hold me accountable, who struggled like I did to find the motivation to leave their house after work, that I was able to break the cycle. However you're feeling, maybe it's stuck in an unhealthy cycle like I was, you can change that. I'm not promising it's easy but I'm promising that we'll be there to support you, motivate you, and empower you along this journey. Making a New Years resolution on January 1st is so cliche...why not start it now?
My favorite form of procrastination is goal setting 😂 I know, priorities are a little weird on that one, but hear me out: when you are putting off doing something it's usually because you aren't passionate about it (looking at you, stack of papers to be graded). So, to overcome this, I set goals. I set meaningful and powerful goals. Then, to go along with it I like to choose a focus for the year based on those goals. After setting my intentions and goals for 2020 I came up with the idea to focus on simple aligned actions. Don't get distracted by all the things and don't strive for the extra credit that nobody was offering. Keeping simple aligned actions to get that boat going down the river to goal-town!
